Students and staff at Kew Beach Junior Public School came together in an inspiring act of learning and remembrance by participating in the Walk for Chanie Wenjack from October 20 to 24, 2025.
Throughout the week, the entire school joined in to collectively walk 600 kilometres, symbolizing the journey that , a young Anishinaabe boy, was unable to complete as he tried to return home from a residential school in 1966.
Led by the two Grade 6 classes, students at every grade level took turns walking together around the school community. The Grade 6 students played an important leadership role by organizing routes, encouraging their peers and keeping track of the kilometres walked each day.
In addition to raising awareness about Truth and Reconciliation, Kew Beach students are also fundraising for the , supporting programs that foster understanding and strengthen relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples across Canada.
