The ÎÛÎÛÂþ» is proud to celebrate the literary success of one of its own. Emma Chappel, a Grade 11 student at A.Y. Jackson Secondary School, has been named one of six finalists in the Youth Short Story category of the 49th annual , a prestigious national competition hosted in partnership with The Walrus.
Now in its eighth year, the Youth Short Story category recognizes outstanding short fiction (under 3,000 words) written by authors aged 13 to 17 across Canada. The winners of both the Adult First Novel and Youth Short Story categories will be announced at a ceremony in Toronto on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
Emma’s story, “Lost Boy,” explores themes of self-discovery, emotional growth and compassion. As a dedicated writer, artist and musician, Emma finds inspiration in books, films and the powerful messages that can be conveyed in just a few moments - or a few pages.
Emma’s recognition as a finalist is a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to the power of youth voices in Canadian literature. The ÎÛÎÛÂþ» congratulates her on this well-deserved honour and wishes her the very best as she takes the national stage on June 5.
